whitehead-institute-client-logo-sm-m0055040xb1386The Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, a client of MBBP, is featured in a New York Times article about progressive research on topologically associating domains (TADs) in DNA.

As the article explains, TADs are a newly discovered design feature of the genome that partition different groups of genes into neighborhoods. If these partitions are broken, various diseases may occur.

By conducting research on TADs, scientists hope to gain a more in depth understanding of how gene expression is controlled. Dr. Richard Young of the Whitehead Institute and his team are involved in TADs research and are continuing to push the boundaries of knowledge about genetic neighborhoods.

On Saturday, October 1st, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences inducted 180 of the nation’s most influential artists, scientists, scholars, authors and institutional leaders as members of its 231st class. The American Academy of Arts and Sciences is one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious learned societies and draws from its members’ expertise to conduct independent research studies in sciences and technology, global security, social policy, the humanities and culture, and education.

Among the inductees is David Page, M.D., renowned geneticist and Director of MBBP client Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research.  Dr. Page has conducted fundamental studies of mammalian sex chromosomes and their roles in germ cell development, with special attention to the function, structure, and evolution of the Y chromosome. Our congratulations to Dr. Page!

Dr. Jaenisch, a founding member of the Whitehead Institute, was awarded the nation’s highest scientific honor for “improving our understanding of epigenetic regulation of gene expression: the biological mechanisms that affect how genetic information is variably expressed. His work has led to major advances in our understanding of mammalian cloning and embryonic stem cells.”

Congratulations Dr. Jaenisch!

This is the second year in a row that President Obama has awarded the National Medal of Science to a member of the Whitehead Institute.

For the second time in three years, MBBP client Whitehead Institute, a nonprofit, independent research and educational institution, has been named the best place in the country for postdoctoral researchers to work.

The honor, presented by The Scientist magazine, is based upon responses to this year’s web-based survey of nearly 3,000 participants representing 93 research institutions. No stranger to the list, Whitehead first cracked The Scientist’s annual Top 15 in 2008, coming in at 14 that year. According to the magazine’s editors, Whitehead Institute received high marks in categories such as facilities, infrastructure, and funding opportunities.
