M0846558MBBP Attorney Robert Finkel was one of several judges in TAMID’s First Annual National Case Competition for TAMID at Boston University. TAMID is a comprehensive, multi-phased program that connects students with the Israeli economy. BU TAMID was one of 27 participants in the Competition.

2014-10-23_13-28-36MBBP joins MIT Enterprise Forum of Cambridge and CHEN PR in hosting the upcoming Beantown Throwdown in November.  Students from top colleges and universities in Massachusetts will pitch off their innovative ideas for start-up companies.  Students representing Babson, Berklee, Boston University, Boston College, Harvard, MIT, UMass Lowell, Northeastern and Wentworth will have 3 minutes to present their ideas to attendees who will then invest in their favorite companies with fake cash. The top three start-up companies with the most “money” invested will win various prizes and take part in a discussion panel the following evening.

IP and Technology Licensing Attorney Howard ZaharoffOn February 28 MBBP IP and Licensing Attorney Howard Zaharoff helped judge the semi-finals of BU’s 2014 New Venture Competition. The contest is sponsored by Boston University’s Institute for Technology Entrepreneurship and Commercialization (ITEC) and is open to current and past BU students, both graduates and undergrads. Interested students and alumni participated in a fall or spring “Pitch and Pizza Competition.” The winning Pitchers went on to the second round, February’s semi-finals, which named six finalists.

These finalists will pitch their business to a panel of experts, including angel investors, and will be eligible for awards that include MBBP’s People’s Choice Award. The finals will be held on Tuesday, April 15th.

Boston UniversityOn Thursday, April 4th Boston University School of Management is hosting the final phase of its accelerator program “New Venture Competition“. Thursday will be an opportunity for finalists to pitch their business to angel investors. Winners will receive a guaranteed spot in BU’s Venture Start-up Camp and a legal start-up package worth $5,000 for each of the top three winners of the Competition. BU Receives $13.6M Grant for Lung Cancer Study 11/18/2011

MBBP client Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) has recently been awarded a $13.6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense Lung Cancer Research Program. The grant will be put toward a five-year national study that will focus on military personnel and veterans at military hospitals and Veteran’s Affairs medical centers. The study will be led by BUSM associate professor of medicine, pathology and bioinformatics, Avrum Spira, and will examine biomarkers as indicators of a future lung cancer diagnosis.

BU Names Allegro Founder 2011 Innovator of the Year 08/04/2011

On July 19th, MBBP client Boston University hosted its second annual Tech, Drugs and Rock & Roll event which 500 industry professionals, entrepreneurs and BU community members attended for an evening of food, drinks, music and technology. BU provost and chief academic officer Jean Morrison also presented the 2011 Innovator of the Year award to School of Medicine associate professor and MBBP client Allegro Diagnostics founder Avrum Spira. The award recognizes BU faculty members whose cutting-edge research and ideas lead to the formation of companies that benefit society at large. Dr. Spira was selected for his research on lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and the effects of smoking on airway epithelial cell-gene expression. Morrison had this to say of the honoree:

Professor Spira is an entrepreneurial scientist, whose practical approach to science has led to the formation of Allegro Diagnostics, a start-up company intent on producing beneficial molecular diagnostics for detecting lung cancer. His accomplishments in the past year include 14 peer-reviewed papers published, one invention disclosure, two patent filings, over $3.5 million in NIH funding, and $8.9 million invested in Allegro Diagnostics.

Allegro Diagnostics Enters License Agreement with Boston University 07/08/2011

On June 29th, MBBP client Allegro Diagnostics, Inc. announced that it has entered into an exclusive license agreement with MBBP client Boston University and the University of Utah Foundation for intellectual property related to Allegro Diagnostics’ molecular testing platform which utilizes a genomic biomarker to detect early signs of lung cancer. Mike Webb, President and CEO of Allegro Diagnostics, describes the agreement:

Allegro Diagnostics is committed to bringing early lung cancer detection to the standard of care. The licensing agreement with Boston University and the University of Utah Foundation helps us to achieve that goal by supporting our continued advancement of this breakthrough platform, including the planned commercial launch of BronchoGen™ in the first half of 2012.
