The Boston Public Library will open an interactive children’s exhibit in English and Spanish, called “Literacise.” The exhibit builds on the important connection between physical activity and learning and is inspired by MBBP client Irene Smalls‘ children’s story Jonathan and His Mommy. Research confirms that increased exercise helps young children improve their concentration, boosts reading comprehension, and raises academic achievement. Literacise = Literature + Excercise, and is made possible through the generous support of State Street Corporation, opens to the public with a special celebration on Saturday, October 3 at 11:30 am. For more information, see the full news item, and the Literacise web site.

It was exciting to be present and hear Mayor Menino declare Saturday “Literacise Day” in Boston. Apparently, the Boston Globe was equally impressed; here’s their coverage: http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2009/10/amid_the_books.html
