Metamagnetics Winner of SBANE “Profitable Connections Award” and MassVentures “START” Program 11/27/2012

Metamagnetics, Inc.On October 18th, the Smaller Business Association of New England held its 2012 Annual Meeting at the Westin Hotel in Waltham, MA. As part of the meeting each year, SBANE selects recipients for its “Profitable Connections Award”,  an award given to member companies that successfully collaborated with SBANE in identifying a successful financial or matchmaking solution to a current challenge or opportunity. This year, eleven companies were presented with the award including MBBP client Metamagnetics, Inc., a research and development company focused on developing innovative microwave materials and device solutions in the areas of radar, communication, sensing and other high frequency electromagnetic technologies.

Earlier this year, Metamagnetics was announced as a winner for MassVentures 2012 “START” Program, a $6 million initiative to help growing companies commercialize technologies developed under Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contracts. As one of ten winners, Metamagnetics was awarded $100,000 and, based on future progress, could possibly receive up to a $500,000 investment after two years. Jerry Bird, President of MassVentures had this to say of the awards:

This year’s winners are a strong indicator of the depth and breadth of innovative technologies coming out of the Commonwealth to support the economy and job growth.

NSBA Awards SBANE President Small Business Award 02/07/2012

On February 2nd the National Small Business Association awarded Bob Baker, friend of the firm and President of the Smaller Business Association of New England (SBANE), the Small Business Technology Council‘s Champion of Small Business Innovation Award. The award recognizes Bob for his contributions to the reauthorization effort of the long-term Small Business Innovation Research bill, which was signed into law by President Obama late last year.

Employment Attorney Bob SheaOn November 3rd MBBP Employment Attorney Bob Shea testified before the Massachusetts Legislature’s Joint Committee on Labor & Workforce Development in support of legislation to amend the Massachusetts Independent Contractor Law. Bob, who testified on behalf of the Smaller Business Association of New England, has advised numerous clients and  written articles concerning problems the current law has caused for many businesses in Massachusetts.

SBANE to Host Political Roundtable with Mass State Senator Karen Spilka 02/22/2011

On March 15, the Smaller Business Association of New England (SBANE) will host a Political Roundtable featuring Massachusetts State Senator, Karen Spilka. Senator Spilka represents MetroWest, one of the most important economic regions in Massachusetts and was appointed Senate Chair of the Joint Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies. Senator Spilka and her staff worked very closely with SBANE on the complete restructuring of the Commonwealth’s delivery system of economic development financial services to small businesses. Karen was the point person in the Senate that lead the initiative to create the Massachusetts Growth Capital Corporation. Under her leadership, the legislature approved a transfer of $15 million and a $20 million bond issue to recapitalize this entity.

On January 11th, the Smaller Business Association of New England (SBANE) will host a complimentary informational session by Bradley Rosenblum on the Small Business Matching Grant Program now available Massachusetts Life Sciences Center. Mr. Rosenblum will discuss the $3 million competitive solicitation for applicants of the program, which is targeted at commercialization-ready life sciences companies that have received Phase II or Post Phase II grants from federal agencies.

Employment Attorney Bob SheaIn February, the Smaller Business Association of New England (SBANE) HR Committee is presenting ”2010 Legal Update” seminar to bring employers up to speed on recent developments in employment law. This seminar will cover topics such as complying with wage-hour and independent contractor rules, utilizing non-compete, non-solicitation and confidentiality agreements, and modifications to the Americans with Disabilities Act (“ADA”). Three speakers, including MBBP Employment Attorney Robert Shea, will lead the discussion through an interactive format.
